Charging and using Garmin Edge 500

Is there any way to prevent the Edge 500 from kicking into charging mode when plugged into an external USB outlet like a PC, a charger or an e-werk (this last one with or without cache battery)?
I'd like to charge it while using it on trips in addition to using it as a bike computer.
